Colón: Its "Fiesta Grande" and the Virgin of Sorrows
By: Valeria Morales
Continuing our journey through the great municipality of Colón, we find one of the largest religious celebrations in both the state and the country.
Connected to the Temple of Santo Domingo and built between 1880 and 1912, the Basilica of Soriano stands out with its beautiful Neoclassical architectural features. Inside, the Virgin of Sorrows (Virgen de los Dolores) is venerated. She is represented by a stunning 25-inch wood-carved figure, capturing the profound grief she felt at the foot of the cross while watching Jesus being crucified.
The "Fiesta Grande": A Growing Tradition
This festivity has become incredibly important and recognized throughout the state. Historically, the main pilgrims came from the municipalities of Tequisquiapan, Ezequiel Montes, and Cadereyta, but word has spread, and it is now recognized across the entire country.
The pilgrimages grow larger every year. This year's Fiesta Grande began on March 7th and will run until April 3rd, which is Sorrows Friday (the Friday before Good Friday).
In previous years, reports showed up to 40,000 pilgrims arriving a week in advance for the Great Feast. However, for this year, 2026, it is estimated that around 100,000 pilgrims will arrive. The central event, a Solemn Mass, is scheduled for March 27th.
